The Benefits of Team Building

'I have been told many times over the years by many employers and from many sources that the most valuable

asset in any company or organisation is its employees.'

I have participated in many team building days over the years; from outdoor adventure parks where teams have to get an object across a rope bridge without dropping it - to army style military fitness assault courses where teams work together to successfully negotiate their team through and over many challenges - to the traditional carrying of the wood log from one position to the next; then sit down class room lectures on team development and learning workshops on how best to describe your department your colleagues and managers by using descriptive purpose made cards,  writing on flip charts, to posting post-it-notes on a wall highlighting the good and bad points; workshops for analyzing you and working out whether you have an introvert or an extrovert personality to improve working relationships, job satisfaction and increased moral.

It does not matter how big or small your business is if your team do not get on as a whole then they will not be performing at their full potential which will eventually lead to low moral, a lack of interest in their job role, then turning up for work late; leading to a high sickness rate and finally accumulating in a lack of productivity and a detrimental effect on the business as a whole.

If this is the case then this may be beyond the role of a Team Builder as I see it. Team building from my perspective is purely and simply the participation of a team of colleagues in various games ranging initially from getting-know-you games, problem solving to building games with the overall aim to get the group working together as a whole; where a chosen group work together to overcome an obstacle which engages everybody together. A happier team can only be beneficial for a company for many reasons; including, increased moral, therefore a happier, more comfortable workforce where staff are able to communicate more efficiently which can only benefit their work ethic and an overall improvement in quality of work.

If there are problems within a team of people, and which, after careful analysis of the behavior and attitudes of the group as a whole and the individuals, it is then decided that there are problems which are - ultimately effecting the overall running of the department, and this may be effecting their work and the business, then this may be, depending on the size of the business, left to the managing director or if the company has one, a learning and development or human resources department.

The modern workplace environment is becoming increasingly challenging for many employers; if all of your staff have a great rapport with each other and an overwhelming positive attitude to their job role, then they will help to raise the profile of your business, its interests, and reputation.
